Cities and towns in the thermal spa and volcanic region

Cities, towns and municipalities at a glance

Do you already know where you want to go? Perfect! We’ll show you everything there is to see and do. And believe us, even regular visitors who have been loyal to Styria for years will find something new – even the locals are sometimes surprised.

The Thermal & Volcanic Region comprises 37 municipalities, 29 of which are designated tourist destinations. Spend a relaxing day at one of the six thermal spas in the Thermal & Volcanic Region, stroll through the charming shopping towns – always on the lookout for the perfect bargain. Celebrate a hole-in-one at one of the renowned golf courses , browse the numerous offerings at the regional farmers’ markets , explore the region on your own by foot or bicycle, and visit the many gourmet producers and restaurants that are guaranteed to satisfy every palate.

History buffs will also find plenty to enjoy. Riegersburg Castle, for example, with the town of the same name, was considered the strongest fortress in Christendom. Numerous archaeological finds attest to settlement on the castle hill as early as 6000 years ago, thanks to its particularly protected location. Bad Radkersburg was first documented in 1182; at that time, the town was still surrounded by two branches of the Mur River, forming an “island” location.
Fürstenfeld was also founded around 1170 by Margrave Ottokar IV as a princely town to secure the imperial border to the east and as a trading center – impressive remnants of the old fortifications still characterize the townscape today.

Celebrate the festivals as they come…

… the Styrians have always been good at that!

And nowadays, the program of festivities is even more extensive and diverse than ever before. Have you ever heard of a vintners’ parade? No? That’s the name given to the tradition that takes place every five years in St. Anna am Aigen. Local wine is, of course, the main focus, but culinary delights, conviviality, and tradition are equally important. Culinary festivals are just as popular in the thermal and volcanic region as music festivals, sporting events, wine festivals, and popular celebrations around holidays and festive occasions like Christmas, complete with its Christmas exhibitions and Advent markets. The towns and villages are showcased in the best possible light – open-air events and outdoor festivals attract large crowds. So celebrate with us and experience Styrian hospitality firsthand!

Under each municipality entry you will also find everything that can be done locally – from  accommodations ,  excursion destinations  and  tours , to culinary restaurants  and  events .
